His expertise is in the field of Mobility and Transport with emphasis on transport policy and economics, as well as the environmental impacts of transport.  His research focuses on "Moving towards Low Carbon Mobility" and within that on:

  • Governance of the mobility and transport system, including the influence of technological developments on the transport system and its implementation as “smart transport” or “Mobility as a Service” (MaaS)

  • Development of “Policy Packages”, including the new methodology for the design of policy packages to advance sustainable transport

  • Public Transport, with emphasis on promoting Integrated Transport and understanding the strategic role of railways in the transport system

  • Conceptualization of Travel Time, especially given the increasing opportunities to use time while travelling and translation of this to planning based on Reasonable (and not Minimal) travel time

  • Adaptive planning and design of transport infrastructure, in order to extend its life and value to society over time

  • Understanding the impact of (investment in) transport infrastructure on core-periphery (socio-economic) relationship

  • Development of “simple” travel demand models for transport planning purposes
