Short Biographical Information

Idit Alphandary (Ph.D. at Yale University 2001), is a Lecturer of Comparative Literature, the Interdisciplinary Program of the Arts, International BA in Liberal Arts, and Tisch School of Film and Television at Tel Aviv University.

 

She also lectures at American universities (Yale, University at Buffalo), Chinese universities (Renmin University of China, Beijing, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou), Swisspeace, Bern University, and at Freie Universität, Berlin. 

 

Her articles on the novel, film, aesthetics, ethics, political theory, and psychoanalysis have appeared in such journals as Philip Roth StudiesCulture Unbound: Journal of Current Cultural ResearchTextusCR: The New Centennial Review, and Philosophy Today, as well as on the edited volumes, Psychoanalysis, Aesthetics, and Politics in the Work of Julia Kristeva, (SUNY Press 2009) and Mediamorphosis: Kafka and the Moving Image, (Wallflower Press/ Columbia University Press 2016), and Democracy, Dialogue, Memory: Exprewssion and Affect Beyond Consensus, (Routledge 2019). She is the editor of collections of articles, Consciousness Between Crisis and Empowerment: Interdisciplinary Studies of Women and Gender, (Kibutz Meuchad 2017), Democracy, Dialogue, Memory: Expression and Affect Beyond Consensus (Routledge 2019).

 

She is currently completing a book manuscript, Autonomy, Fantasy and the Other: An Essay on Literature and Object Relations in Guy de Maupassant and D. W. Winnicott. She is currently completing a book manuscript on Narratives of Forgiveness and Resentment in Cultures of Mass Atrocities.

 

Research interests

Her current research projects are:

 

1. Narratives of Forgiveness, Resentment, and Justice in Relation to Crimes Against Humanity. A study in collaboration with German, Danish, Finish, and Chinese scholars.

2. End of Life Issues in the Work of W. G. Sebald, an interdisciplinary study at Tel Aviv University.

3. Cinema and Traveling Theory: Constructions of Western Hermeneutics in Sinophone Film Criticism.

4. Democracy, Dialogue, Memory in Europe and Israel. 

 

 

Her expertise comprises the nineteenth and twentieth- century French and British novel and her work involves psychoanalytical interpretations of literature and film. She examines the relevance of post-structuralism to the study of on the one hand, English Romantic Poetry and on the other hand storytelling and speech-act theories in the novel and in film. She is also an expret of film and visual studies as these are examined in the 19th century through the present in European painting, and visual and film philosophy. Her research of film cultures extends to Hollywoood, European and Chinese film theory.
