נושא עבודת המחקר:  אתרי העלייה הנוצרית לרגל בשלהי העת העתיקה סביב ים כנרת: היבטים דתיים – ארכיאולוגיים

אזור ים כנרת הינו בעל חשיבות יוצאת דופן בדת הנוצרית ושני בדרגת חשיבותו וקדושתו לאחר ירושלים ובית לחם. באמונה הנוצרית מוכר אזור הגליל כערש הנצרות – כאן גדל ישוע וכאן עוצבה תפיסת עולמו, בגליל הוא מצא את תלמידיו והורה את תורתו, בה חולל ניסים וריפא, כאן הונחו היסודות לדת החדשה שהתפתחה לאחר צליבתו. הנופים הפסטורליים של הגליל שימשו רקע מובנה לארבעת ספרי הבשורה: מתי, מרקוס, לוקס ויוחנן. בשנת 300 לסה"נ אזור הגליל לא היה מבוקר בקרב הצליינים הראשונים. הנוסעת אגריה, שביקרה בארץ הקודש בין השנים 384-381 לסה"נ, מזכירה רק שלושה מקומות קדושים במסעותיה לאזור הגליל: כפר נחום 'ביתו נסיך השליחים', טבחה והר האושר הקדום. עם זאת, ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים ומקורות כתובים באזור המחקר מעידים על התחזקותה של הגיאוגרפיה הקדושה במרוצת התקופה הביזאנטית.

מטרת עבודת המחקר הזו היא לשפוך אור על סוגיית העלייה לרגל הנוצרית והמקומות הקדושים הנוצריים באזור הגליל בכלל וסביב ים כנרת בפרט, לבחון מבחר של מכלולים בעלי הקשר דתי עם זיקה לעלייה לרגל הנוצרית הביזאנטית וכן ממצאים ואלמנטים מתוך שלל הממצא הארכיאולוגי, ההיסטורי, האפיגרפי והאומנותי. כוונתי במסגרת עבודת מחקר זו היא לעמוד על אופי הקשר בין העלייה לרגל הנוצרית, תנועת הנזירות ולהתיישבות כפרית ועירונית במרחב גיאוגרפי נתון, וזאת - באמצעות עריכת טיפולוגיה אדריכלית ורעיונית של אתרי הקודש הנוצריים בגליל בכלל וסביב ים כנרת בפרט. חשוב, כי עבודתי עוסקת בנושא "היסטורי" שהארכיאולוגיה טרם נתנה עליו את הדעת – המאחד והמקשר בתנועת הצליינות הביזנטית בראי התרבות החומרית.

Palaestina saw one of the greatest historical and cultural events in its history during Byzantine rule – the victory of Christianity as the official religion of the Empire in 313 CE. This point represented the transition of the province from of no particular significance to the Eastern Empire, to The Holy Land, Terra Sancta, and a goal of pilgrimage, monasticism and Imperial investment. The Sea of Galilee region is of extraordinary importance at Christian religion, second only to Jerusalem and Bethlehem. In the Christian faith, the Galilee region is known as the cradle of Christianity.

In 300 CE, the Galilee region was rarely visited by the first pilgrims. The pilgrim Egeria, who visited the Holy Land between 381-384 CE, mentions only three Holy Places in her journey to the Galilee: Capernaum:” The house of the prince of the apostles”, Tabgha and the ancient Mount of Beatitudes. However, archeological finds and historical sources in the area of my study indicate the strengthening of the sacred geography during Late Antiquity and development of the Via Sacra Galilea, which was used by Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy sites associated with Jesus' Acts.

The goal of my research is to shed light on the Christian pilgrimage and Christian Holy Places in the Galilee region in general and around the Sea of Galilee in particular, to examine a selection of complexes with a religious connection to Byzantine Christian pilgrimage as well as finds and elements from archeological, historical, and epigraphic aspects. Important, that my work will deal with a "historical" thesis that archeology has not yet considered - that unifier in the Byzantine Pilgrimage Movement in the light of material culture.
