על עצמי:

שמי נח גרבר ואני מתעניין במפגש בין יהודים אשכנזים ליהודים לא-אשכנזים בארץ ובתפוצות, בעיקר בעת החדשה. בעבר חקרתי את הסוגיה הזאת דרך מקרה הבוחן של קהילת יהודי תימן, יצירתה הרוחנית המגוונת והאופן שבו אלה עברו תהליך מורכב של ניכוס לפרויקטים שונים של תרבות יהודית מודרנית ותרבות עברית חדשה.

עתה אני בוחן את ההתקבלות של זרמים דוגמת מדעי היהדות וההשכלה מחוץ לאירופה, באמצעות קהילות ופזורות סחר שמקורותיהן במצרים, עיראק וסוריה.

בד בבד אני מתעניין בשאלה הגלובאלית, כיצד התמודדו יהודים עם המיסיון  בעת החדשה; למשל דרך המקרה של קהילת ביתא ישראל באתיופיה החל מאמצע המאה ה-19?

 About myself:

My name is Noah Gerber and my primary interest is in the 'East-West' encounter between non-European and European Jews in the modern period. Initially the history of the Yemenite Jewish community as a topic of research was at the center of my work. Currently I am expanding my focus to including other communities and trading Diasporas from Egypt, Iraq and Syria. Emphasis is usually placed on the intellectual and cultural aspects of this encounter, which allows me to account for how the Haskalah movement and critical Jewish scholarship were received beyond the European fold.

 Teaching obligations as well keep me focused on the history of ethnic stratification and strife in both pre and post 1948 Israeli history. I am also exploring how the Beta Israel in Ethiopia has been received in global Judaism, as well as additional consequences of the role Protestant missionaries have played in the modern Jewish experience.
