Introduction to Israeli Culture

התרבות הישראלית הינה האתר המרכזי, שבו נוסדה, הוגדרה, הועמדה לבקורת ושוכתבה,  הזהות הלאומית שלנו. במהלך הקורס נבחן כיצד דומיין המקום הלאומי וכיצד נוסחה הישראליות בראשית הדרך. נשאל כיצד התפתחו התוצרים התרבותיים לאורך שנות המדינה ביחס לנורמות חברתיות וערכיות משתנות, אילו ישראליות וישראלים זכו לייצוג דומיננטי בתרבותנו לאורך העשורים, מהי מסכת החיים שיוצגה בידי היוצרים והיוצרות השונים והמגוונים, וכיצד באים לידי ביטוי בתרבותנו שברים ומתחים בחברה הישראלית.

נדון בשאלות אלה ואחרות כפי שבאו לידי ביטוי בארבעה תחומים: הקולנוע הישראלי, התיאטרון הישראלי, הספרות הישראלית והאמנות הפלסטית הישראלית. כל תחום יוצג מאת מרצה מומחה, תוך פרישה רחבה של מגמות ומאפיינים, ועריכת היכרות עם נשות ואנשי התרבות, אשר לקחו חלק בכינונו של הלאום ובנסיונות המתמשכים להגדרתו של "הישראלי".

דרישות הקורס: קריאה פעילה משיעור לשיעור, מבחן בית בתום הקורס.

Israeli culture is the central arena where our national identity was founded, defined, critically examined, and recorded. Throughout the course, we will explore how the national domain and the Israeli narrative have evolved. We will examine how cultural products have developed over the decades in relation to changing social norms and values. We'll discuss which Israelis and aspects of Israeli culture have held dominant representation over the years, the life narratives presented by various creators, and how fractures and tensions in Israeli society find expression in our culture.

These topics and others will be addressed across four domains: Israeli cinema, Israeli theater, Israeli literature, and Israeli visual arts. Each domain will be presented by a specialist lecturer, offering a comprehensive overview of trends and characteristics, and providing familiarity with the cultural figures who have contributed to shaping the nation and its ongoing definition of "Israeli."

Course requirements: Active participation in classes and a final exam at the end of the course.
