Lillian and Rebecca Chutick)

1996  מיכל הראל היא מתאמת הפורום לנשים הראשונה בשכר;

The NCJW Women Studies Forum at Tel Aviv University was established more than 25 years ago by volunteering lecturers who wished to introduce to the Israeli academia and public at large feminist theory and activism. At the time, there were no gender studies in Israel, and the forum was an incubator for what evolved as the NCJW Women and Gender Studies Program, that now offers a B.A and M.A and is independent of the Forum.

Our aim is to develop strong, fruitful and inspiring connections between Israeli academics who are experts in a variety of issues related to gender and feminist activists and women and girls outside of campus. Our vision is embedded in the perception of the academia as part of the community and as holding social responsibility not only towards students and colleagues but also towards women and other disadvantageous groups in society.

Currently, the Forum is voluntarily headed by Dr. Tal Dekel from the Arts faculty and the NCJW Gender Studies Program, and advised by a steering committee of 23 lecturers from a variety of university departments. The is coordinated by Tali Inbar-Gloozman, an M.A. student at TAU.

For several years, the Women Studies Forum is generously supported by the National Council of Jewish Women.

A History of the Women's Forum at Tel Aviv University

Written by Prof. Amy Singer

Like any history, this one is subjective. It is based on a series of interviews I conducted with members of the Women's Forum, past and present, interviews of different length, in person, by phone and through e-mail. I asked different people different questions, tried to fill in some gaps by looking at the papers available. This is a first writing of our history, but surely not the last. For this reason, I have chosen an unconventional format; the style is not intended to inflate or diminish the importance of any person or period unnecessarily. Instead it aims to give a sense of the flow of activity and inspiration that created what is today the Women's Forum and the Program in Women's and Gender Studies with NCJW at Tel Aviv University.

This history is written as one component of the exhibit entitled "'This Sex Which is Not One': Female Images 2002", mounted in the exhibition foyer of the Sourasky Central Library at Tel Aviv University, on the occasion of Internation Women's Day 2002 (the exhibit runs from March 10-15). Displayed in the exhibit is a graphic and textual rendering of the activities of the Women's Forum and the Program. The title of the exhibit is a quote from renowned French feminist thinker Luce Irigaray. It serves as a framing ideology for showing original photographic and video art works by and about Israeli women, claiming that their images articulate experiences more painful, critical, cynical, and sober than those generally portrayed through the vision of a male fantasy about how to locate womens' bodies in this culture. The works show bodies which are sensitive, suffering, present and clear in their many forms and experiences.

March, 2002

1982  Rina Shapira (Sociology & Anthropology), on sabbatical at Hunter College of the City University of New York, met Donna Shalala, then President of Hunter College. Shalala had been instrumental in setting up Women's Studies there, among the first such programs in the U.S. Prior to this, Shapira had had some conversations with members of the administration at Tel Aviv University about the possibility of setting up inter-disciplinary programs, including Women's Studies. When Shapira returned to Israel, she was appointed to be an advisor to the rector for women's affairs on campus.

1985  Towards the end of this year, roughly, Shalala came to Israel as an official guest of the U.S. Cultural Center. Among others, she talked with Shapira, and Delila Amir (School of Education/Sociology & Anthropology), again urging that women’s studies be organized on the Tel Aviv University campus. At the time, there were budding programs in Women's Studies at Haifa University and at the Hebrew University.

1986  Shapira and Amir set up the first Women's Forum. Amir worked tirelessly as coordinator of the Forum for a decade, 1986-96, providing continuity to the organization.

Friday Meetings: Regular gatherings began to take place, organized around academic lectures, given by women members of the faculty in their fields of expertise, on topics of research on women and gender. These meetings consistently enjoyed large turnouts, reflecting the existing and growing interest in the topics. Clearly the idea of women's gatherings to learn about women and meet women colleagues found a ready audience. Among the early participants were women from all parts of the campus, including students, faculty and administrative staff belonging to numerous faculties.

Some of the faculty members involved in the early years were:

Stella Amossy (French Literature), Mira Ariel (Linguistics), Nurit Kenaan-Kedar (Art History), Dalia Etzion (Business),

Ariella Friedman (Psychology), Rachel Giora (Comparative Literature), Hannah Herzog (Sociology & Anthropology),

Billie Melman (History), Asia Pazi (Business), Yohanan Peres (Sociology & Anthropology) Shula Shahar (History),

Shula Volkov (History), Hana Wirth-Nesher (English)

late 1980s  While Shula Volkov headed the Forum, the General B.A. Program was persuaded to introduce the first course unit in Women's Studies, this due to the efforts of Stella Amossy and Billie Melman; at the same time, a course program in Women’s Studies was introduced in the Social Sciences. By 1988, some 50 courses dealing with women and gender were being offered in different faculties on campus.

1989  First contacts made with US/Israel Women-to-Women and Virginia L. Snitow, who supported all kinds of activities related to women in Israel. Snitow established a ten-year fund at Tel Aviv, Haifa, Hebrew and, later, Ben Gurion Universities. this was the first financial support for the Women's Forum: $3000. The money supported the Friday lecture series, which continues to this day.

Contract signed endowing the Dr. Lillian Chutick and Dr. Rebecca Chutick Scholarship Fund for women graduate students working on topics related to women. Since 1992, the fund has distributed $3000 annually, for a total of approximately $30,000 thus far.

1990-91 Na'amat creates the Dvorah Netzer Fund, with matching funds from the president of Tel Aviv University, for research, scholarships and the regular activities and administration of the Women's Forum.

1992  First academic feminist conference in Israel, held at Tel Aviv University, in cooperation with Sylvia Bejawi of Beit Berl, funded by the Friedrich Ebert Fund, marks the beginning of annual academic conferences on Women's Studies

1993  Young Forum established to promote the visibility of the Women and Gender Studies graduate students, to provide a place for them to talk about their work and where women's studies lectures were given. Chutick scholarship winners work to keep this Forum running

Special issue of Zmanim, A History Quarterly on Women's Studies appears (Winter 1993, No. 46-47), edited by Idit Zertal

1996-97  Hannah Naveh (Hebrew Literature) takes over as head of the Forum and begins long-term plan for a program of Women's Studies, working with a driving vision to obtain funds and backing in order to establish an independent program in Women's and Gender Studies

The need for Women’s Studies was articulated as follows:

“It is clear that there is a vital necessity for academic study that will thoroughly examine the role that women play in Israeli society. Such research will scientifically review the potential instruments at the disposal of those who wish to be fully involved in all aspects of Israeli life.

It is also essential to establish a framework for presenting work at the academic level to women dealing with these problems as well as to women who are seeking a framework in which it will be possible to investigate, learn, teach and encourage the development of women’s subjects.”

1996  Michal Harel, first paid administrator of the Women's Forum hired; since 1997, Shirley Kahanovich has held this position

1997  Orly Lubin (Comparative Literature) heads the Women's and Gender Studies course cluster in the General B.A. program in the Faculty of Humanities, the largest of all the clusters, with 260 students. This cluster eventually served as one platform for the organization of the Women's and Gender Studies program.

Under Rector Nili Cohen, a general call for long-range development plans with an emphasis on interdisciplinary academic programs produced a proposal to establish Women's and Gender Studies as a university-wide cooperative program.

Joint proposal submitted by the Women's Studies Forum, the program in Gender Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the programs in Women's and Gender Studies of the Faculties of Humanities and Arts, receiving favorable reviews and encouragement from the administration

1998  First contacts begin with NCJW (National Council of Jewish Women) and Shari Eshet, Director of the Israel office of NCJW. Prior to this, NCJW had long been active supporting a program in the School of Education at the Hebrew University and community projects in Israel; the organization was now looking for a project to support at Tel Aviv University.

Contract signed between NCJW and Tel Aviv University, included two parts: a major permanent endowment enabling the separate establishment of the Program in Women's and Gender Studies with NCJW and a generous grant allowing for the significant expansion of the activities of the Women's Forum.

In the wake of the new national Sexual Harrassment law, "Not in Our School" founded as a feminist group working against sexual harassment and sexism. With the support of the Forum, "Not in Our School" devoted its energies consciousness raising and education about harassment and sexism on campus in order to encourage and initiate changes in the balance of power between the sexes in the society.

2000  From among "Not in Our School" several women set up the Hotline for Information and Support to Victims of Sexual Harassment on Campus. The hotline takes calls at any hour, with guaranteed confidentiality.

Ariella Friedman becomes head of the Women's Forum with NCJW. Today the Forum supports the following activities related to Women’s and Gender Studies:

◊ the Friday lecture series

◊ an annual academic conference, which draws participants

from all the universities in Israel and from abroad

◊ lectures and conferences in various departments on campus

◊ guest speakers from abroad

◊ the Young Forum

◊ creation of new courses

◊ special courses in other faculties (e.g. Engineering)

◊ outreach enrichment courses (e.g. at Neve Tirza Prison)

◊ social activism on issues such as recognizing International

Women's Day, support for the sexual harassment

hotline, and for the group Solidarity, students and

employees working for fair employment practices.

◊ scholarships

The agenda of the Forum is set by the steering committee and by proposals from the general membership, as well as from other organizations. Among other things, the Forum supports the resolution of problems originating in gender issues that arise for women faculty members and women students at the university.

2001  Hannah Naveh becomes head of the new Program in Women's and Gender Studies with NCJW, with Orly Lubin serving as the principal advisor of the Program. The program first degree students enroll, some 50 in number. History, philosophy, Sociology, Art History, Law, Politics, Film, Literature, Education, Psychology--and more--all these subjects are studied through a critical examination of their basic academic assumptions and in combination with women's and gender studies, and feminist alternatives of conceptualization and academic description.

Due to the increase in the activities of the Forum, the Snitow Fund decided to increase its support of the Forum in 1998 to $5000, and in the year 2000 budgeted $7000 to it. Upon the death of Virginia L. Snitow in 2001, the Fund decided to make this a permanent annual grant.
