Beijing and Moscow: Allies Again?

This talk will review the history of Sino-Soviet and Sino-Russian relations since the late 1940s. The presenter will discuss the reasons for the rise and fall of the Sino-Soviet alliance in the 1950s and the 1960s, and show how Moscow and Beijing avoided sliding into a nuclear confrontation in the 1970s and gradually edged towards rapprochement in the 1980s. The presentation will also touch on Beijing’s reaction to Mikhail Gorbachev’s political reforms, and how China and Russia sought to rebuild their relations after the Soviet collapse. Finally, the presenter will talk about the basis for the current Sino-??Russian entente: is this an alliance of convenience, or are there “ideological” motivations behind ever closer relations between the two powers?
