What Brain Evolution Reveals About Human Nature
Once upon a time, the world was ruled by creatures without brains. And across the expanse of evolutionary time — with the innovation that comes from trial and error and the deaths of trillions of animals — you ended up with a three-pound blob between your ears that makes you human. But what makes your brain distinctive in an animal kingdom full of astonishing brains? And what is human nature, anyway? In this talk, we’ll begin with the fantastical evolutionary story to learn how different kinds of human minds, with the ability to invent different customs and laws, and develop different histories, arise from a single human brain plan — a plan that has a lot in common with the brains of fish, birds, and blood-sucking lampreys. We’ll learn how a collection of human brains can draw a line in the sand to create the border between two countries. Or draw lines in a continuum of skin tones to create different groupings of people to benefit some at the expense of others. We’ll even consider how human brains power the creation of civilizations as well as tear them down. Your brain is not the only important organ in your body, but it holds an insight or two for understanding the most central and challenging aspects of your life.
