Crisis Elements of Soviet Historiography: A case of Ancient History

Many researchers still associate the beginning and end of the Soviet historiography with the start and endpoints of the Soviet political regime. But with careful treatment, we can see that Soviet historical scholarship as an ideological and institutional system was formed after the establishment of Soviet power, and its elements were present long after the fall of the regime. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of internal factors in the evolution of Soviet historiography. The lecture identifies several interconnected factors: the hierarchy in the using information; the problem of narrative unification; the problem of competition of ideas. The combination and development of these factors led Soviet historiography to an internal crisis, which occurred even before the collapse of the USSR.
