מיכאל פרידמן הוא היסטוריון של המתמטיקה במכון כהן. לפני שהצטרף למכון כהן הוא היה פוסט דוקטורט באוניברסיטת הומבולדט בברלין, במכון פורייה בגרנובל ובמכון מקס פלנק למתמטיקה בבון. כיום הוא עובד על ההיסטוריה של המתמטיקה במאות ה-19, ה-20 וה-21. בהקשר זה, הוא בוחן את הפרקטיקות החומריות של המתמטיקה (קיפול, אריגה, שזירה, קשירה, כמו גם מכשירי ציור ושרטוט ומודלים תלת-ממדיים) וכיצד נובע מהם ידע סמלי-מתמטי. בנוסף, הוא גם חוקר כיצד פילוסופיה קונטיננטלית מתמודדת עם מתמטיקה במאות ה-20 וה-21.
